Elkhorn Man Wins $200,000 Playing Pick 5

Joseph Cunningham of Elkhorn won $200,000 playing Nebraska Pick 5 from the Nebraska Lottery.

Cunningham purchased his ticket at Hy-Vee Food Store #11 at 1000 S 178th St. in Omaha. The ticket contained three quick pick plays for the Friday, April 12 drawing, one of which matched that night’s winning numbers 10, 23, 34, 35, and 39.

He always plays quick pick tickets, but Cunningham knew something sounded familiar when he heard the numbers being read off on the news.

“I knew I had two tickets with 39 in them,” he said. “I figured maybe I’d won at least a free ticket.”

And one of those sets of numbers did win him a free play, but it was the third set of numbers that struck gold.

“I scanned it on the app,” he said. “It was such a shock.”

Cunningham and his wife Pam Cunningham said they’ll be using some of their winnings towards charity, to help out family and to upgrade their vehicle.

Nebraska Pick 5 is Nebraska’s unique Lottery game: all the proceeds from Nebraska Pick 5 stay in Nebraska, and all the winning tickets are sold in Nebraska at Nebraska Lottery Lotto game retailers. The odds of winning the Nebraska Pick 5 jackpot, which starts at $50,000 and grows by $10,000 each drawing that is not won, are 1 in 658,008 while the overall odds of winning a prize in the game, which has drawings seven nights a week, are 1 in 9.2.
