Lottery Group Splits $10,000 Mega Millions Prize

May 25, 2010 – A group of 22 co-workers from the Beatrice area have claimed the first $10,000 Mega Millions prize from a ticket sold in Nebraska.

Every week, Jeffrey Cullison of Beatrice purchases Nebraska Lottery Lotto tickets for himself and 21 co-workers at Northern Natural Gas in Beatrice. The other members of the group are: Jerome Buss of Adams; Robert Delahar of Adams; Robert Lawson of Agenda, KS; Rick Bent of Beatrice; Tim Clapper of Beatrice; Loren Gregory of Beatrice; Ron Kapustka of Beatrice; Donald Keller of Beatrice; Eugene Lauritsen of Beatrice; Karl McClintock of Beatrice; Kurt Weber of Beatrice; Carl Pyle of Clay Center, KS; Jon Wernette of Clay Center, KS; Eddie Fahey of Clifton, KS; Joseph Wurtz of Clifton, KS; Bryson Benne of Clyde, KS; Carol Woerlen of Johnson; Alvina Obering of Pickerell; Lynn Schomerus of Unadilla; Richard Dorn of Wymore; and Larry Lottman of Wymore.

For the Tuesday, May 4 drawing, Cullison purchased a five-play quick pick ticket at Nick's Shell, 900 East Court Street in Beatrice. One play on the ticket contained four of the five winning white ball numbers (9, 21, 31, 36, 43) and the Mega Ball number (8) from the May 4 draw for a $10,000 prize.

This is the first $10,000 Mega Millions prize claimed since the Nebraska Lottery began offering the game on March 20, 2010.

While claiming the $10,000 prize for the group on May 12, Cullison told Nebraska Lottery officials that they have been purchasing tickets together for approximately two months, usually waiting until the Powerball or Mega Millions jackpot exceeds $100 million. Each player will receive a $454.54 share of the prize. Cullison stated that the group members plan to set aside some of their winnings to purchase tickets in the future. “I’ll probably do something fun with the rest of my share,” he said.

Mega Millions is a multi-state jackpot game currently offered by 42 lotteries across the United States. The odds of winning $10,000 playing Mega Millions are 1 in 689,065, while the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 40.
