The Gift of a Red Hot Payout
The past year has brought a lot of changes for Emily White. She moved to a new town, got a new job and suddenly, an even bigger change came her way April 21 when she won $35,000 playing Triple Double Red Hot 777.
She scratched the winning ticket and saw that she had won the top prize of $35,000. Unfortunately, she scratched the ticket Friday and had to wait to claim her prize until the following Monday. According to her husband, Nathan, it was the “slowest weekend ever.”
Emily claimed her prize April 24, and said the money is a much appreciated aid to the couple. They moved to Kearney last year from St. Louis at the suggestion of a friend who was originally from the area. When they first arrived, the pair lived in a tent. For several months that was home while the couple searched for jobs. They hung in and Nathan found a job with a roofing company. Currently, the Whites live in a small apartment they have been slowly furnishing with thrift store finds, but the space is a bit cramped for two people. Emily said the money would give the couple an opportunity to find a place of their own.
They plan to keep things simple and are looking for something inexpensive that they can turn into a real home. Nathan works for a roofing company and she thinks that with her ideas and his handiness, they can create something completely unique.
“It’s still like a dream,” she said. “It’s like we’re floating.”
In addition to a home, Emily plans to purchase a new, more reliable vehicle. Their current car doesn’t start a lot of the time and Emily doesn’t feel incredibly safe while driving it.
Shortly after the Whites moved to Kearney, Emily’s family, including her grandmother, relocated to California. Emily plans to visit them as soon as possible, and looks forward to seeing her grandmother, who she said was her best friend.
Emily described her win as a tremendous gift that she doesn’t want to waste.
“We are so very thankful,” she said. “We don’t take anything for granted.””
