Summer 7s Giveaway Finalists Split $100,000 at the Nebraska State Fair

After receiving more than 73,000 entries, the Nebraska Lottery ended its Summer 7s Giveaway contest by handing out at total of $100,000 at an event during the Nebraska State Fair.

The seven semifinalists assembled on August 30 to determine their share of the prize money. Each semifinalist was guaranteed to win at least $3,000, with one person taking home the top prize of $50,000.

A series of elimination rounds narrowed the field of contestants down to two: Kim Mills of Thedford and John Kaup of Dodge. In the final round, the contestants were presented with 12 identical cowbells. Eleven of the bells were modified so they would not ring, so the player that chose the working bell would win the $50,000 top prize.

Mills took the first turn selecting a cowbell, but it did not ring. Kaup then chose a bell, but it too did not work. After Mills made another unsuccessful attempt to choose the bell, Kaup then rang the winning cowbell as the audience roared with approval.

The remaining contestants received the following prizes:

  • Kim Mills of Thedford - $20,000
  • Dawn Giebler of Lincoln - $10,000
  • Mark Guzman of North Platte - $7,000
  • Carl Steimle of Panama - $7,000
  • Brenda Douglas of Humboldt - $3,000
  • Kirk Yost of Bellevue - $3,000
