Two Pick 5 winners hit it big on the same drawing at the same store
It’s not all that common for us to have two winners of the Pick 5 jackpot in the same night. Two winners will buy tickets with the same numbers and split the jackpot. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it does happen.
But what happened on February 27 took us by surprise.
There were two Pick 5 jackpot winners that night that would split $94,000. They were sold about six days apart, in the same city, at the same store, with the same numbers. To two different people.
Both tickets were purchased at Hy-Vee Food Store #10 at 3410 North 156th Street in Omaha. One seven-draw, three-game ticket was purchased on Friday, February 21 and one single draw, five play ticket was purchased on February 27, the day of the drawing.
At first, we thought it might have been the same player who bought a ticket with the same numbers that ended up winning the jackpot. We’ve had that happen before. The last time was back in November of 2018 when Margaret Frerichs of Ogallala hit the Pick 5 jackpot after a clerk accidentally printed two tickets with the same numbers. We even gave her two big checks to celebrate her two big wins!
On February 28, we had a winner—who decided against publicity for their win—come in to claim one of the winning Pick 5 tickets, we paid them out $47,000 for their half of the jackpot and reminded them to take a look around for the other ticket, just in case they stuck it somewhere.
The winner was adamant that they hadn’t bought another ticket with the same numbers.
It was a real head scratcher for us. We couldn’t quite figure it out.
The answer came on March 4, when Raymond Aschoff and his wife Bernie came in to claim $47,000 with the other winning ticket. They were not the winners from the week before.
The Aschoffs recently moved to Omaha from Atlanta and Raymond started playing Pick 5 only about a month ago.
They’re planning on hanging onto their winnings for a little bit, but also having a little fun with it.
It just goes to show, you never know where the winners will come from. Sometimes it’s the same store on the same drawing night.
We’re still pretty surprised.
