NU vs COLORADO
by Jim Rose

BUFFALO IS BEST SERVED IN THE LAST 2 MINUTES

Never a doubt right? Thought so. Yessir, with about 1:50 left, we had 'em right where we wanted them.

"Mr. Alex Henery, paging a Mr. Alex Henery...you're shot at mythology is coming up right now. We need you on the field immediately."

There is an age old tradition around here that never seems to die out. When the game is on the line. When Dear Olde Nebraska U needs a guy with an "S" on his chest and a red cape to do something magical, we always get one----and the guy who does it has the letters NE after his home town listing in the game program.

Your honor, may I present the evidence to the jury?

Exhibit A from Friday's double-bypass win over Colorado:
* Mr. Zach Potter of OMAHA, NE swats two passes in the air both of which are intercepted by fortunate teammates (and one of those was a Mr. Tyler Wortman of GRAND ISLAND, NE).

Exhibit B from Friday's chest pounder against CU:
* Mr. Ty Steinkuhler of LINCOLN, NE makes play after play from his defensive line spot on Senior Day in the last 160 seconds or so to keep the Huskers alive for the comeback.

Exhibit C from Friday's momentum builder-in-the-off season thriller over our good neighbors to the west:
* Mr. Alex Henery from Catlin Magnet School, Beverage Middle School and Burke H.S. (all within 5 minutes of each other in OMAHA, NE) who came to Lincoln on an academic scholarship and who more closely resembles the first cello chair in the Burke Symphonic Band than a gridiron hero, calmly drives a school record 57 yard field goal on 4th and 25 with 85,000 customers doing signs of the cross right through the north goal posts....with three feet to spare. By the way, it was his FOURTH field goal of the day and ensured that 1.8 million of us truly have a happy holiday season.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, the prosecution rests.

If there is one theme to this season, it's that Nebraska is Nebraska again. Those guys played like us. Cared like us. Fought like us. Never quit like us.

8-4 is a good, but not great record. You don't win five national titles and get to 800 wins faster than every school but three on 8-4 seasons. Next year it needs to be nine or 10..then 11 or 12.

But to me, 2008 was much more about whether we could go back. Could we recapture the essence of why there really is no place quite like Nebraska? Would the modern-day, what's-in-it-for-me kid forget that stuff and just want to be a part of, not apart from?

The jury has a verdict.

Somebody get on the phone to central casting. We have quite a comeback story here.
